About the Programme
The double degree programme is launched by the Institute of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (ILAL), School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Peking University, China, and the School of Education and Professional Studies (EPS), Griffith University, Australia since 2013. It comprises the Master of Arts in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (MLAL) from Peking University and the Master of Arts with Honours in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Language (MA (Hons) in TESOL) from Griffith University. This three-year full-time double master’s degree program will equip students with systematic theoretical knowledge and provide them with the cutting-edge development in the field of linguistics. The students will be able to take a giant leap in their research ability.
Admission Requirements
This programme will accept 2-3 GU students for 2015-2016 academic year.
- Applicants must be Griffith University students (students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas students with Chinese nationality are not included).
- Applicants seeking admission to the DMDP starting at either GU or PKU must demonstrate their English language proficiency by one of the following means:
- A minimum score of 575 on TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); or
- An internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 88 (no score less than 21); or
- A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with no sub-score of less than 6.0; or
- No score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR (International Second Language Proficiency Rating), or
- a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); or a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
- Since the second term from 2012, a minimum score of 61 on PTE
All the test results listed above are valid for two years since the day they are issued.
No language requirements for native speakers of English.
Note: There is no requirement of language proficiency for candidates who are native speakers of English.
Application
There will be two separate application processes for the DMDP both at PKU and GU. Both universities will assign a unique programme code to distinguish students enrolled in the DMDP. All applicants should apply online (
http://www.isd.pku.edu.cn/apply) and submit application fee to the International Students Division at PKU.
- Application Materials
- Peking University Application Form for International Students (Master Programs) with a photograph fixed. Please visit http://www.isd.pku.edu. cn/apply, or http://www.studyatpku.com, fill in the application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for reference.
- Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating expected graduation date), must be original documents or certified copies in English.
- Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must be original documents or certified copies either in English.
- A personal statement (800 words for master program in English): The format can be downloaded at http:// www.isd.pku.edu.cn.
- Two recommendation letters from your referees. The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents in English. The format of the reference letters can be downloaded at http:// www.isd.pku.edu.cn.
- One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary) .
- Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field.

- Application Fee: 800 RMB, paid in cash, by Yinlian bank card or through online payment. Any other currency or travel check would not be accepted.
- Application Period: From October 10, 2014 to March 30, 2015. Please make sure mailed materials arrive before deadline.
Please note that incomplete application or application without application fee will not be processed. All the application materials would not be returned. The application fee is not refundable.
- Admission. All applications will be reviewed by the PKU admission panel. The admission notification will be sent by PKU by the end of May. An official PKU admission letter and visa form (for international students) will be sent by early July.
Period of Candidature
The period of candidature for the DMDP is normally 3 years and early completion is allowed.
Curriculum
- Credit points. To obtain the degree of Master of Arts in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (MLAL) at PKU, candidates must obtain 29 Credits with the equivalent of a minimum of 70 marks in each compulsory course and 60 marks in each elective course and a pass grade in the thesis component.
- Curriculum.
The compulsory courses offered in the MLAL degree total 8 credits. They are:
- Systemic Functional Grammar
- Empirical Research Methods in Language Studies
- Theories and Schools of Linguistics
- Syntax
Some of the sample elective courses in the MLAL degree are: Pragmatics, Semantics, Language and Culture, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, Computational Linguistics, Loic of Language, Corpus Linguistics.
- Instructor. Students will complete their dissertation under the supervision of their instructors.
- Dissertation. To obtain the degree in MLAL, candidates must obtain a pass grade in the thesis component.
Tuition Fee and Funding
All students accepted in the EPS-GU – ILAL-PKU double degree programme will pay fees at the institution where they are enrolled. For 2015 entry, the tuition fee for each year at PKU is 29,000 RMB.
Note: Scholarships may be available.
Degree Conferral
Upon successful completion of studies at both institutions, GU students will be conferred Master of Arts in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (MLAL) by Peking University and Master of TESOL (Honors) by Griffith.
