In 2021, Peking University (PKU) will enroll foreign students to study for master’s and doctor’s degrees under the “application and examination system”, which assesses the applicant’s comprehensive quality and ability.
The specific provisions are as follows:
1. Disciplines and Majors
Peking University is a comprehensive research university with 11 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management and art. It has 262 doctoral programs and 285 master’s degree programs, in addition to 29 professional degrees.
In 2021, there are 395 majors (including 194 doctoral majors and 201 master’s degree majors) for international students in the main campus of Peking University, of which 75 majors will be taught in English. 2. Study method and length of study
2.1 The study methods of master’s degree and doctoral students at Peking University are divided into full-time and part-time. For details on the learning methods of each major and direction, please refer to the “Peking University 2021 Master/Doctoral Admissions Major Catalogue (International Students)” (Website link:

2.2 Unless otherwise specified by the enrollment department (or project), the basic study period for master’s degree candidates is 2 or 3 years, and the basic study period for doctoral students is generally 4 years.
3. Application Prerequisites:
1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. Residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to Peking University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before April 30, 2015, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.
2) Applicants for master’s degree programs must have attained a bachelor’s degree and students who graduated from non-Chinese universities must hold a bachelor’s degree from a university accredited by the Ministry of Education of China. (Grade skipping or joining in the middle of the course is not permitted.) Applicants for doctoral programs must have attained a master’s degree, and students who graduated from a non-Chinese institution must have a master’s degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China. Students with bachelor’s degrees may apply for admission to PhD program in subjects of sciences or in a continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies.
3) The applicant’s academic performance, academic level and language ability should meet the admission requirements of the major he/she is applying for.
4. Application period
October 14 – December 4, 2020

(2) Applicants may apply for a maximum of two programs. The application materials and fees are not refundable and there will only be one admission result. In order to avoid the possibility of a clash in the interview timing(s) of two different programs, please carefully consider while applying for a second program.
6. Application Materials:
(1) Peking University Application Form for International Students (master’s degree and Ph.D. programs) with a photograph affixed. Please visit http://www.studyatpku.com, fill in the application form and submit it online, then print a hardcopy for reference.
(2) Graduation certificate and degree diploma, must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.Note: Students expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating their expected graduation date.
(3) Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standards achieved; these must be original documents or notarized copies either in Chinese or English.

(5) Two recommendation letter from a professor(s) or associate professor(s) related to your major (or equivalent professionals with relevant academic title.). ● For English-taught programs, applicants whose mother tongue is not English are required to submit TOEFL, iBT (100 points or above) or GRE (315 points or above) scores or other certificate to prove their English language proficiency. For specific requirements, please refer to the application information of the respective English-taught program. Please note: some departments may require applicants to submit a certificate or evidence of Chinese language proficiency. Kindly submit the materials as required in the application information.
(7) One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary).
(8) Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field (if relevant).
(9) Other materials required by the specific school or department you apply to.
Note:Except for the recommendation letters, 2 copies (one original and one copy) of the above-mentioned application materials must be submitted.(Each person can apply for up to two programs; in the case of two applications, each application is independent and each application should be submitted separately in hardcopy with the required application materials.) 7. Application Fee:
The application fee for each program is 800 RMB. You can apply to a maximum of two programs. If you apply for two programs, you must pay both application fees at the same time, a total of 1600 RMB.
Note: Incomplete application materials or application without application fee will not be processed. Application materials will not be returned. The application fee is not refundable.Applicants are required to pay the registration fee before submitting the application materials. We accept cash, payment with the Yinlian bank card or through online payment. (Please pay online according to the prompts of the online application system for international students). Any other currency or travel cheque will not be accepted.
8. Preliminary Examination by the Department/School
The international Students Division will review the applicant’s basic qualifications. After passing the review, the application materials will be forwarded to the Office of Graduate Administration of the respective school/department in the middle of January 2021.
The school’s (department, institute, center)admission team will organize various professional admissions expert panels. All the submitted application materials will be examined to assess the applicant’s professional, academic level anddevelopment potential. A shortlist of applicants will be drawn up for the next step of examination, the specific date and time of which will be decided by the respective school/department.
9. Re-examination by the School/Department
The school’s (department, institute, center) admissions team will organize a specialized admissions expert panel to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the professional level and language ability of candidates who participate in the re-examination round.
Candidates participating in the second interview should be prepared to share with the admission expert panel relevant information, such as a self-introduction of their personal scientific research experience and results, understanding and views on the subject area of application, learning and research ideas, etc. According to the re-examination results and the results of an assessment of the candidate’s personal qualities, the admission expert group will comprehensively evaluate the candidates’ ranking, select the best candidates, and submit the preliminary admission list to the department’s admissions team.
10. Admission:
1) After comprehensive review, the Office of Graduate Admission will decide on the final admission list based on the results of the second examination by the school or department. The admission list will be published by the International Student Division.
2) The International Student Division will send to the successful candidates an admission notice, visa application form and other documents in late June 2021.
11. Enrollment:
New students will enroll in early September 2021. The specific time will be announced in the admission notice. Admitted students must go through the admission and registration procedures at Peking University in strict accordance with the time specified in the admission notice.

2) Scholarships
International students can apply for the following three types of scholarships:
(1) Chinese Government Scholarship college program: free tuition, free accommodation fee, monthly living expenses and medical insurance provided in accordance with state regulations.
(2) Beijing Scholarship for Foreign Students: tuition subsidy.
(3) Scholarship for freshmen of Peking University: free tuition, monthly living expenses, medical insurance.

13. Visa, Medical Insurance and Accommodation
13. 1 Visa Information:
Students admitted to PKU may apply for a visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country with your letter of admission and the JW201/202 form. International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain an ‘X1’ visa, which will only be valid for 30 days after your arrival in China. You must come to the International Students Division and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China.
13.2 Medical Insurance
The Ministry of Education of China stipulates thatall international students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to purchase the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students on the day of registration. Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.
13.3 Accommodation Information

Note: Accommodation will be provided to students with scholarships that cover accommodation.
Self-funded Students are required to find their own living accommodation. Please note that students who live off campus must register with the local police station within 24 hours of arrival.
14. Graduation and degree awarding
Students who have completed all the requirements stipulated in the academic plan and passed their thesis defense upon completion of their study are permitted to graduate. After being examined and approved by the Academic Degree Assessment Committee of the university, the corresponding academic degree will be conferred.
