School of Economics is an important base of domestic economics studying, with complete disciplines, first-class faculty and perfect echelon. There are six undergraduate majors: economics, international economics and trade, finance, risk management and insurance, finance, environmental resources, and development economics, as well as six master's degree programs, six doctoral degree programs, and an economics doctoral rover.
February 2004, School of Economics signed a cooperation agreement with China Center for Economic Research, hiring professors and associate professors of CCER as part-time teachers in the School of Economics, and students of School of Economics and CCER can choose courses mutually, which integrates teaching and research resources to form a powerful economic disciplines lineup. Wu Jinglian, Wu Shuqing, Xiao Zhuoji, Contending, LIU Wei, SUN Qi Xiang, Lin, Wen Hai and other famous scholars are taught at the School of Economics.
School of Economics annually recruit and cultivate outstanding students from the north and south. There are about 10 champions of national college entrance examination in all the Provinces and autonomous regions select School of Economics every year, 1/4 of freshman are the first five in their provinces. Our graduates has a wide range of options: 40% pursue master’s degree in the country, 20% go abroad to study in the United States, Britain, Canada and other countries, the other 40% choose to work in the Central and the State Council's major ministries, provincial and municipal authorities , banks and foreign Enterprises. Over the years, School of Economics has sent tens of thousands of talents for National Economic and Social Development.
School of Economics is one of the institutes those have the most active Student Association, which make the students’ amateur life very colorful, in addition to an orderly learning. The solid foundation of knowledge, good interpersonal Relationships, exquisite organizational leadership of our students have been highly recognized and appreciated by PKU and the community.
Undergraduate study:
In the first two years of undergraduate study, all the students have basic courses in economics which means that there is no difference in majors. Students could choose their majors and orientations in the third year according to their characteristics, interests, career plans, and etc. Students could choose from six majors which are major in economics, major in international economics and trade, major in finance, major in risk management and insurance, major in public finance and major in development economics. Students will be awarded with Bachelor Degree of Economics.
Postgraduate Study:
Our master program has eight majors which are major in political economics, major in history of economics thoughts, major in history of economics, major in western economics, major in world economics, major in human, resource & environmental economics, major in public finance and major in finance.
Our PhD program has seven majors which are major in political economics, major in history of economics thoughts, major in history of economics, major in western economics, major in world economics, major in public finance and major in finance.
Discipline directions are as follows:
(1) Economics. The Curriculum is referred to foreign universities, providing the young students who want to be economic theory researchers, macroeconomic managers and professional managers with a growth and development stage. Graduates are suitable for both for the government's economic policy-making departments, financial institutions, teaching and research institutions and companies working in the country or abroad for further studies and lay a solid foundation.
Department of Economics
The Department of Economics has five teaching and research sections: political economy, microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and economic history and history of economic thoughts. They integrate theoretical, historical and empirical studies. Majors such as political economy, western economics, economic history and history of economic thoughts are 'National Key Disciplines'. The Department of Economics currently offers 4 Master programs and 4 Ph.D programs. Among the 25 faculty members, 80% are professors and associate professors. There are also prominent scholars such as Mr. Wu Jinglian as adjunct professors and guest professors.
The department is a 'National Training Bases of Economics Fundamental Talents' and a 'Characteristic Major Construction Site'. Its student training plan emphasizes broad horizon, solid foundation and integration of theory and practice. It aims at cultivating high quality graduate student candidates for relevant disciplines and supplying the society with professional talents. The department has established: teaching platform for economics theory, economic history and economic application; tutor system for undergraduates; academic platform for students such as the journal Future Economists; social survey bases and other practice platform. Among all the graduates of the department in the last 8 years, 41.5% pursued master degrees in China, 30.5% pursued further study abroad, and 28% worked in various fields.
Department of International Economics and Trade
The Department of International Economics and Trade was established in 1985 as a successor of the International Economics Major which was established in 1958. The department aims at training professionals with good understanding of economic theory, strong language skill, and solid knowledge of both international economic theory and practice to meet the needs of China's further reform in the global age. Our graduates are able to make economic analysis and project planning etc in foreign-related sectors of government and financial institutes. They can engage in the decision-making, consulting and managing etc in various foreign enterprises and multinational companies. They can also find employment in colleges, universities and research institutes.
Department of Finance
The Department of Finance has advantages in student sources, courses, faculty members, teaching facilities and academic achievement, etc. It makes efforts to cultivate professionals who are competent in finance and other fields, with solid economic and financial knowledge, financial practice working capability, strong language and computer skills, high morality and social adapting abilities. The following knowledge and capabilities should be achieved after four years' of study.
1, Basic knowledge of the financial theory, understanding of the development of the discipline; 2, Solid foundation to deal with works about bank, securities, investment and insurance, etc; 3, Basic methods of information retrieval and material requisition, and academic researching potentials; 4,Good manner and professional ethics, understanding of the national financial strategies, policies and regulations.
Department of Risk Management and Insurance
Established in 1993, the Department of Risk Management and Insurance is one of the first five insurance departments approved by the Ministry of Education. Its history can be traced back to the insurance discipline of Peking University in 1912.
With the PKU spirit of 'patriotism, progress, democracy, science' and the SEPKU spirit of 'steering the economic development of the society in order to benefit the livelihood of the people' in mind, the department devotes to teaching, research and social services of insurance, risk management, actuarial and social welfare. It aims at cultivating outstanding professionals with 'high quality, broad foundation and special skills'. It has and maintains extensive exchange and cooperation with many famous insurance and finance institutes as well as government departments and international academic organizations, which provides a wide platform for teaching, research and talent-cultivating.
Its graduates are very competitive in the job market. They find employment in renowned organizations of insurance, banking, securities, consulting and practice sector. Some of them enter prominent universities and research institutes such as Harvard Business School and Wharton Business School. They can also work in governmental departments like the Insurance Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Commerce. They all make contributions to economic and social development.
Department of Public Finance
The Department of Public Finance aims at training professionals with good economic theory foundation and solid knowledge of public finance, taxation and public economic policies. The graduates should acquire strong ability of research, management, and decision making, as well as skills in foreign languages and computer operation. Its courses integrate theory and practice, students should achieve following knowledge and capabilities after four-year study of economic theory and professional knowledge.
1,Basic knowledge of economic theory, knowledge of relevant finance and taxation system and practice, knowledge of the development of public finance; 2, Ability of pursuing further study, or working in colleges and institutes for teaching and research of public policy and macroeconomic management; 3, Be competent at doing public economic research and policy making in government departments; 4, Provide auditing, tax filing, and asset assessment services in accounting firms, law firms and other agencies; 5. Have the comprehensive quality to manage modern enterprises.
Department of Development Economics
As a teaching and researching institute for undergraduates and postgraduates, the Department of Development Economics is the first founded department in China aiming at improving people's welfare and social development in developing countries. Students receive good basic training in economic theory and method, as well as lots of professional trainings related to development. Its courses and research fields correspond to that of the department of development economics, department of international development and development research center in prominent universities in the US and UK. The graduates could work in development-related international organizations and non-government organizations. They could also provide economic analysis, forecast, planning and management in comprehensive economic regulation sections, policy-researching sections, financial organizations and enterprises.
Currently, all the people in school of economics are under the leadership of Dean Professor Liu Wei, and actively strengthen all aspects of college construction, hiring domestic and abroad elites to enrich teaching and researching team, and strengthen the cooperation and communication with foreign famous universities, and sdd a new disciplines, striving to make the institute become the best of the country and Asia, and has international influence ASAP.
